Module summary

The MA Practice-led Dissertation will enable students to make an original contribution to knowledge and understanding of an aspect of their field of study. The dissertation workshops and individual supervisions will support the development of independent research and critical and conceptual thinking. Alongside this, there will be an emphasis on assessing the critical and practical skills necessary to independently develop new projects and interventions. A specific area of research will be developed by the student with the support of their supervisor, drawing from practice-led approaches.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to make an original contribution to knowledge and understanding of an aspect of their field of study. Relevant fields include arts management, audiences and participation, art and curatorial practice, philosophies and social studies of science and museum/heritage studies. Students will develop their research skills, through identifying research questions, and developing their topic through practice-led approaches.

- The development of critical self-understanding about methods and resources for analysis, writing and research in the context of their field of study.
- Experience of locating and analysing evidence, through practice-led approaches, and presenting research findings in a lucid and coherent form.

- Skills necessary to undertake higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in an area of professional practice.
- Evaluating own achievement and that of others.

- Independent learning.
- Use of methodologies and practice-led resources.

Syllabus

The subject of the dissertation will be developed between the student and their supervisor, through a combination of group workshops and individual meetings, with the topic to be finally agreed by the Programme Director.

Private study

493 hours comprised of reading, researching and writing one dissertation, and developing a practical installation, exhibition or intervention.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance and engagement in dissertation workshops (which include peer-to-peer feedback activities) and the MA symposium.
